Herb’s Menorah
My web master lit the 2 Flames for the first night of Chanukah. The tallest candle is the Shamash. It is Used to light all eight candles.
This evening is the First of 8 Days Of Hanukkah. Above is a Menorah that my husband, Herb, created many years ago. He didn’t take many creative arts classes, but this was a soldering and metal arts class.
On his first attempt, he would come home after class with some masonry nails soldered together. He said I have know idea what this is going to be. The assortment of soldered masonry nails kept growing.
Then one evening in late fall he came home and said, “Here it is!” I was stunned. I kept examining and studying this magnificent masterpiece. It looked like many different energies and seemed alive. I put it on our mantle and it stayed there until we moved.
This second piece is another favorite of mine. Being a bicyclist, it seemed natural for this old timey bicycle to be a subject for Herb. The copper seat got lost in transition and a few spokes were damaged as well. Among others sculptures, Herb also made many small pieces with bolts and nails and metal objects. He made a drummer with her whole trap set for our daughter and a tennis player, serving, for our son.
Herb would put his bicycle in my artist’s studio, upside down to balance the spokes. It seems Herb found this art form very meditative for himself. Sort of like Zentangle is for me. Herb would be in such a single pointed state of consciousness, focusing on each spoke, that I could walk into the room, and he would not even know I was there. It seems like various physical activities can put us in meditative states naturally.
