Herb had fallen and broken his hip on June 26th, and had a partial hip replacement, then complications at the hospital. He returned to Rehab on July 4th but the dementia he’s had for 5+ years, didn’t allow him to succeed. We put him under Hospice care on July 17th and he died on July 25th, at 7:15 P.M, peacefully.
For those who might be familiar with the Mayan Calendar, July 25th is the yearly day out of time between the New Year and the old. I’ve been studying this calendar for 23 years, so for me, the timing was significant.
Below find a few pictures of Herb that Tami put together into a collage, in Herb’s room during his last few days. Herb rode his bike to work through the National Cemetery and down the National Mall almost to the Capitol. Then, with his early retirement, becoming a National Capitol Tour Guide for 20 years, he took tourists there on a regular basis. He has long wished to have his ashes buried there. Herb’s ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery was held on Dec. 4th, 2015 at 2:00 pm.
We, Herb’s family wish to thank you for the special memories of each of you that has warmed our hearts in times past.
Love and Blessings to you all. The Schaffer Family: Miriam, Tami & Brett
